Pentecost – Shavu’ot

meaning-of-pentecost-shavot

Lev 23: 15, 16.

And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete.

Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD. (KJV).

15 “And you will have counted to yourselves in the time after † the Shabbat-rest, from the day of your making come the sheaf of the wave offering, there will be seven weekly Shabbat-rests, ‡

16 until in the time after‡ the seventh Shabbat-rest you number a fiftieth † day.” (EHSV).

Shavu’ot – background and context.

The Torah or simply put, instructions, was given by YHVH on the sixth day of the third month of Sivan, which was a Shabbat (sabbath) of the biblical, religious calendar, exactly 50-days and 7 weekly sabbaths from the 16 Aviv / Nisan in 1632 BC.

Three Great Trumpets

These mark major events in the redemptive plan of YHVH and are associated with days in the biblical calendar and the Feasts of YHVH

The First

The First Trump is associated with the Feast Of Shavu’ot (Pentecost) when YHVH gave the Torah on Mt. Sinai in Arabia. Although there are many other times in which the shofar is blown.

Exo 19:19.

And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. (KJV).

19 Then was the sound † of the trumpet going on, and very strongly. Mōshēh spoke, and the Almĭghty answered him with thunder. ‡ (EHSV).

Again the word “voice” ק֣וֹל qōl. The answer was with a “thunder voice” or the “sound of a thunderous voice.” The same Hebrew word means sound, voice, and thunder.

The Last

The Last Trump is associated with and is blown on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Teruah, the first winter feast (please see next chapter). The apostle Paul (rav sha’ul) specifically mentions the Last Trump.

1 Cor 15:51-52

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the Last Trump.

51 Behold, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,

52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the farthest shofar λ, because the shofar will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

15:52 λ Or “utmost trumpet,”(cf. 1 Yoɦ. 2:18); see that ἔσχατος means “ pertaining to being at the farthest boundary of an area, farthest, last, utmost, finest ” (BDAG, pg  397), e.g. ἕως ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς “unto the far most part of the earth” (Isa.48:20; Acts 1:8; 13:47).

▷ The farthest trumpet is the one that goes throughout all the land הַכִּפֻּרִ֔ים תַּעֲבִ֥ירוּ שֹׁופָ֖ר, Lev. 25:9), and not only the land, but throughout all the earth. The Jubilee trumpet was the one that travelled the farthest, to every corner of the land.

▷ It cannot be the last in time, because trumpets are sounded in perpetuity. If it would be the last in a series, then no series is numbered that Paul could have known. One could say it is the last most trumpet pertaining to the Jubilee cycle, and this would be true enough. But this is also the farthest trumpet in the extent of its reach in the land, and this observation should not be overlooked. In fact, it seems paramount.

▷ In Matthew 24:31 this trumpet is identified as the “trumpet of great sound,” (q.v.) which most nearly fits the “trumpet blast”  שֹׁופַ֤ר תְּרוּעָה֙  in Lev. 25:9.

▷ It fits that the resurrection and transformation should be on Yom Kippurim since it is on this day that final cleansing from sin comes (cf. Lev. 16:30). It also fits the pattern of redemption, since Messiah was born on the day of Trumpets, died when the Passover was
offered, and ascended from the grave with the end of the wave offering. And the Holy Spirit was poured out on the following Shavu‘ot. Thus it is fitting that the Most High will make good use of his appointed times in regard to the resurrection.

The Great

The Great Trump is associated with and is blown on Yom Kippur.  (Matthew 24:30-31).

Absolutely fantastic teachings on Shavuot, thank you so much!

I would just like to clarify whether the word ‘weeks’ is a mistranslation of ‘shabbatot’ (‘Sabbaths’) and whether this would alter the counting of the Omer?

    Thank you for your patience.

Hi Amanda, thanks for your question. From Page 65-143 of The Resurrection Day of Messiah Yeshua by D. Gregg goes into detail how both Judaism and the proto-Catholic church both conspired to alter translations in an attempt to divorce themselves from each other. Page 154 onward explains the Shavu’ot count. Enjoy. Shalom. Bobby
